SFC Energy and EDGE Sign Agreement to Develop Energy Solutions for Defense, Security and Infrastructure
Key Facts
EDGE announced that it had signed a strategic cooperation agreement with SFC Energy to develop, validate and market advanced energy solutions in the UAE for use in defense, public security and critical infrastructure. The agreement places the German company's products on a development path geared to local security and operational needs, with solutions available for testing before marketing. Within EDGE, the agreement will be implemented by Al Fahad for Electrical Systems, which specializes in integrated security systems and information technology infrastructure. The parties did not disclose the agreement's financial value or expected returns. The announced initial phase involves developing and validating the solutions, with commercial steps to become clearer as work progresses.
The technologies the two companies will work on include the SFC Jenny and SFC Emily tactical fuel cells, Evoy hybrid systems and SFC Labs-R power supply platforms. The scope combines fuel cells, hybrid power systems and supply platforms, according to the product list in the announcement. The solutions will be tailored to advanced security applications, including high-energy laser and directed-energy laser applications. The inclusion of these uses indicates that the agreement targets power provision for specialized security equipment, alongside defense and critical infrastructure applications. The announcement did not specify operating requirements or delivery schedules for these systems.
EDGE said the first demonstration models are under development, indicating that the partnership remains in the solution-building and testing phase. The companies are exploring local manufacturing, integration and maintenance opportunities, as well as export potential within the region. These plans link product development in the UAE with its integration and servicing after development, if those opportunities proceed to implementation. However, the announcement describes manufacturing, integration, maintenance and exports as opportunities under exploration and does not announce final decisions on them. Progress on the demonstration models and proof-of-concept projects will serve as a later indicator of the cooperation's transition from development to commercial use.
Al Fahad's chief executive said the agreement brings together SFC Energy's fuel cell technologies and EDGE's expertise in protecting critical infrastructure. He added that this aims to "create new capabilities purpose-built for complex environments." EDGE describes itself as an Emirati technology and defense group, while SFC Energy says it is a global specialist in producing and selling hybrid power systems and fuel cell technologies. This division of roles combines the German company's energy technologies with the Emirati group's expertise in security systems and local integration. The announcement did not identify specific projects or locations where the solutions would be used.
SFC Energy's chief executive said that "proof-of-concept projects will be the first decisive step." He added that local integration, maintenance and manufacturing could provide a "solid foundation for growth in the UAE and the region." The company thus links the partnership's progress to the results of initial projects, followed by the potential to build local operations, while those operations remain among the opportunities the parties are exploring. At the company level, SFC Energy sales reached about 82.352 million euros in the first half of 2026, up 11.9% year on year, compared with 73.607 million euros in the same period of 2025. Incoming orders totaled 108.653 million euros, compared with 43.665 million euros a year earlier, while the order backlog stood at 104.852 million euros on June 30, 2026.
In August, SFC Energy narrowed its 2026 outlook to the upper end of its previous guidance, expecting sales of between 166.0 and 175.0 million euros and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of between 31.5 and 34.0 million euros. Its chief executive said the significant increase in incoming orders and the order backlog "strengthens visibility on the continuation of our growth." The company also said in its annual report published on March 26, 2026, that defense, public security and civil applications accounted for about 50% of group sales in 2025, and expected defense business to contribute about 15% to 20% of 2026 sales. These figures provide context for SFC's activity in the defense sector, but do not specify the agreement's impact on sales or forecasts. The company had announced on August 5, 2026, that its Capital Markets Day scheduled for October 7 would present its strategy, technology roadmap and key growth drivers.
