UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures came in stronger than expected on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. FXStreet reported that the British Pound struggled to gain momentum despite the hot inflation data as rising UK government debt levels weighed on market sentiment.

The annual inflation rate in the UK reached 3.5% in September 2026, surpassing the 3.4% forecast and the previous 3.1% reading. Core inflation also rose to 2.8% annually during the same period, exceeding the 2.7% estimate. While higher inflation typically bolsters interest rate expectations, the positive impact was offset by concerns regarding increased public borrowing.

Market participants are looking ahead to the release of UK Retail Sales on October 23, 2026, with forecasts projecting 1% annual growth. The Services PMI is also scheduled for release that day, with an expected reading of 51.8.
