Canada Fast-Tracks 1M Bpd Pacific Link Oil Pipeline to Asia
Key Facts
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Ottawa will list the Pacific Link pipeline project as one of national interest to fast-track the federal review process. According to Oilprice.com, the project aims to transport 1 million barrels per day from Alberta to the Pacific coast to reduce the energy sector's dependence on the U.S. market and provide a direct route to Asian buyers.
The Canadian government aims to complete the streamlined federal review by September 1, 2027, potentially allowing construction to begin on a project estimated to cost between C$35.2 billion and C$43.7 billion. This infrastructure push comes as Canada continues to send more than 90% of its crude exports to the United States, while Asian demand grows with China already taking approximately 60% of seaborne shipments from the existing Trans Mountain system.
