FDA Pauses New Enrollment in Biohaven Epilepsy Program Over Metabolite Data Gap

Key Facts

1The FDA paused new enrollment in the BHV-7000 program on September 4, 2026, pending additional nonclinical data on a specific metabolite.
2Dosing continues for more than 600 patients, and BHV7000-303 results remain scheduled for the second half of 2026.
3Biohaven said more than 1,200 participants have received BHV-7000 to date.
4BHVN closed at $15.00 on September 9, 2026, within a $14.42-$15.46 range.

The FDA placed a partial clinical hold on Biohaven's BHV-7000 epilepsy program, according to a company filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The September 4, 2026 hold letter pauses new-patient enrollment until clarifying nonclinical studies concerning a specific metabolite are completed.

The hold is limited to new enrollment. Dosing with BHV-7000 continues for more than 600 patients already randomized across the program, while pivotal study BHV7000-303 is fully enrolled. Biohaven said its topline readout remains scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Study BHV7000-302 continues dosing existing participants, but new enrollment is paused pending the additional data. The BHV7000-201 open-label extension also continues dosing, and Biohaven voluntarily applied the enrollment pause at sites outside the United States.

Biohaven said rodent testing left insufficient information to assess the risk of a particular metabolite to humans. The company added that the finding's relevance to human safety remains uncertain and that BHV-7000 has generally been safe and well tolerated in more than 1,200 participants dosed to date. Those are company assessments, not a final FDA determination.

The FDA explains that a clinical hold may cover only some studies and that a sponsor must submit a complete response addressing the identified deficiencies before the suspended activity can resume. The agency reviews a complete response within 30 calendar days, but that does not guarantee the hold will be lifted. Biohaven expects the additional nonclinical studies to become available in the coming weeks.

BHVN closed at $15.00 on September 9, 2026, after trading between $14.42 and $15.46 during the session. Those prices do not establish the market's reaction to the disclosure because they precede the September 10 Form 8-K publication.
