EIP-8141 Scheduled for Hegotá With P256 and Gas Sponsorship

Ethereum developers have moved EIP-8141 into the Scheduled for Inclusion section for the Hegotá upgrade, changing its status from “considered” to a stage signaling strong intent to ship barring unforeseen issues. EIP-8141 remains a draft authored by Vitalik Buterin and 9 co-authors, and no Hegotá mainnet activation date has been set.
EIP-8141 proposes a new transaction type that separates validation, execution and fee payment into a sequence of “frames.” A single transaction can contain up to 64 frames, allowing a smart account to define its validation rules, approve who pays gas and execute user operations within one envelope.
The specification also lets consecutive frames form an atomic batch, meaning the group either succeeds together or has its state changes rolled back. A failed batch is not fee-free, however: the specification says the maximum-cost collection and sender nonce update are not reversed when the batch fails.
The design separates the transaction sender from the fee payer. Paymasters can sponsor gas under dedicated validation and solvency rules, potentially allowing an application or another party to fund a user's interaction before the user holds ETH. That experience still depends on a sponsor being available and approving the transaction.
The proposal supports P256 signatures alongside other signing options. P256 is used by technologies including Apple Secure Enclave, Android Keystore and FIDO2/WebAuthn, potentially enabling wallets to offer device-backed keys, passkeys and simpler key management. Final recovery flows would still depend on each wallet's design.

Glamsterdam remains the nearer upgrade, with an unconfirmed Q4 2026 mainnet target and changes intended to support safer expansion of network capacity and gas limits. Hegotá follows it, but its activation schedule remains blank. The next steps are client implementation, testing and monitoring for revisions to the EIP-8141 draft before activation.
