This indicator measures the change in the total value of new purchase orders for durable goods, excluding transportation equipment. Because orders for items like commercial aircraft are extremely volatile and large, removing them provides a more stable and accurate view of underlying manufacturing trends. It is often considered a better gauge of business investment intentions.
It is calculated by taking the total Durable Goods Orders figure and subtracting the value of orders for transportation equipment (automobiles, aircraft, etc.).
