It measures the health of the service industry, which accounts for a significant portion of the regional economy. A reading above zero indicates that the sector is expanding, while a reading below zero indicates contraction.
The index is calculated by taking the percentage of respondents reporting an increase in business activity and subtracting the percentage of respondents reporting a decrease.
