About This Indicator

4 questions

Core PPI YoY is the 12-month percent change in the Producer Price Index for final demand less foods, energy and trade services. It covers selling prices received by domestic producers across goods, services and construction, based on about 100 thousand monthly price quotations. By removing the three most volatile or margin-based parts, it gives a steadier read on underlying trends than overall final demand.

It is not a consumer-price gauge, does not cover imports, and excludes excise taxes and tariffs, though producer reactions to tariffs count. The programme began in 1902, and the current Final Demand-Intermediate Demand model dates to January 2014 data.

Prices refer to the Tuesday of the week including the 13th, or between the 9th and the 15th, with farm and service exceptions. Data appear monthly in the second or third week after the reference month at 8:30 AM Eastern Time, on dates posted before the year starts.

Each release includes a news release, a detailed report and database tables, with 4-month revisions and 5-year seasonal recalculations each January. Adjusted data suit monthly trend views, while unadjusted data suit 12-month views and contracts. There is no official threshold: up means producer-price inflation.

Core weight is 67.851% of final demand, split across four steadier parts described below.

  • Core goods, 21.7%: goods less foods and energy, such as computers for investment and motor vehicles.
  • Transportation and warehousing services, 4.4%: passenger transport, cargo transport and warehousing for final demand.
  • Services less trade, transportation and warehousing, 40.5%: publishing, banking, lodging, health care and portfolio management.
  • Construction, 1.6%: new, maintenance and repair construction for final demand, such as office buildings.

The release for June 2022, issued July 14, 2022, shows how the core works when energy spiked. Headline final demand rose 1.1% on the month and 11.3% over 12 months, while core rose 0.3% and 6.4%. Energy jumped 10.0%, or about 90% of the goods increase, with gasoline up 18.5%, while chicken eggs fell 30.2%. Services rose 0.4%, led by trade margins up 0.8% and food-and-alcohol retailing margins up 3.8%, while portfolio management fell 2.7%.

  1. Sample and collect: Probability sample of establishments reports prices monthly, usually for the Tuesday of the week including the 13th.
  2. Weight items and indexes: Weights reflect producer and product importance, while index weights use census shipment and revenue values, updated about every 5 years.
  3. Aggregate with modified Laspeyres formula: The index equals 100 times current basket cost divided by reference-period basket cost, with fixed base-period quantities.
  4. Gaps, quality and seasons: Missing prices use the average change in the same cell, quality shifts excluded, and X-13 ARIMA removes seasonal moves.
  5. Publish and compare: The monthly change uses adjusted data, and the 12-month change equals 100 times the index-point gap over the year-ago index. Reference base November 2009 = 100, the core series uses August 2013 = 100, and indexes publish to three decimals. For example, 140.066 minus 129.116 equals 10.950 points, divided by 129.116 times 100 equals 8.5%.

Key point

PPI tracks prices received by sellers, not prices paid by shoppers, and trade indexes track retail and wholesale margins, not shelf prices. It covers only domestic output and excludes excise taxes and tariffs, though producer price reactions to tariffs count.
