Nonfarm Payrolls Private measures the change in the number of employees on the payrolls of private businesses, excluding government workers and farm employees. As the private sector accounts for the vast majority of employment, this figure is a vital gauge of the U.S. economy's health. It is a major component of the comprehensive monthly employment report.
Derived from the Establishment Survey (CES) conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which surveys approximately 122,000 businesses and government agencies.
