About This Indicator

Description

Government Payrolls represent the monthly change in the number of people employed by federal, state, and local government agencies. This figure is a component of the headline Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report but is often excluded when analysts want to focus on 'Private Payrolls' to gauge organic economic growth. While government hiring is less sensitive to market conditions, large fluctuations can significantly impact the total NFP number. It includes sectors such as public education, healthcare, and administration.

Methodology

The data is collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) through the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey, which polls approximately 122,000 businesses and government agencies.
