The Reuters Tankan is a monthly survey of large Japanese companies that closely tracks the Bank of Japan's official quarterly Tankan survey. It provides an early look at business sentiment in the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors. It is highly regarded as a leading indicator of Japanese industrial production and capital spending.
The index is a diffusion index calculated by subtracting the percentage of companies reporting 'pessimistic' conditions from those reporting 'optimistic' conditions. A positive reading indicates an overall improvement in business sentiment.
