Average Cash Earnings YoY tracks the yearly change in average monthly total cash earnings (all employer-paid cash pay before tax) per regular employee. It comes from the Monthly Labour Survey (MHLW's monthly payroll survey) covering private and public workplaces with 5 or more regular employees across 16 industries. The sample (about 33,000 workplaces drawn from about 2,000,000) includes full-time (general) and part-time workers, with large workplaces (500 or more staff) fully counted. It is a macro average (total payroll divided by headcount), not any worker's raise and not household income, since it excludes retirement and investment income.
