The WPI Manufacturing YoY measures the annual change in the wholesale prices of manufactured goods in India. As manufacturing constitutes the largest weight in the overall Wholesale Price Index (WPI), this sub-index is a critical gauge of industrial inflation. It reflects the price pressures faced by producers and is often a precursor to changes in consumer prices. Economists use this data to assess the health of the industrial sector and input cost trends.
The index is calculated by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry using a weighted average of price changes for a basket of manufactured products. The weights are based on the value of output in the base year.
