The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) Food YoY measures the annual change in the prices of food articles at the wholesale level in India. This indicator is a vital component of the overall WPI and serves as an early warning signal for retail food inflation, which directly impacts the cost of living for millions. It includes primary food articles like cereals, vegetables, and milk, as well as manufactured food products. Policymakers, particularly the Reserve Bank of India, closely monitor this data to gauge inflationary trends and decide on monetary policy actions.
The index is calculated using a weighted average of wholesale prices for a basket of food items. The year-over-year (YoY) percentage change compares the current month's index value to the same month in the previous year.
