The M4 Money Supply measures the change in the total amount of domestic currency in circulation and bank deposits within the United Kingdom. It is a broad measure of money supply that includes notes and coins, as well as bank accounts and other liquid assets held by the private sector. Economists monitor this indicator to gauge liquidity in the economy and potential future inflationary pressures. A significant increase in M4 can signal rising consumer spending and investment, while a decrease may indicate economic cooling.
The indicator is calculated by the Bank of England by summing the total value of sterling notes and coins in circulation plus sterling deposits held by the non-bank private sector. It excludes public sector deposits and inter-bank lending to avoid double counting.
