The Retail Price Index (RPI) is a legacy measure of inflation in the United Kingdom that tracks the change in the cost of a representative basket of retail goods and services. Unlike the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the RPI includes housing costs such as mortgage interest payments and council tax. It is still widely used for adjusting state pensions, index-linked gilts, and certain commercial contracts.
Calculated by comparing the current price of a basket of goods to the price in a base year using an arithmetic mean (Carli index) across various regions in the UK.
