The Inflation Rate MoM is the one-month % change in the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices for the European Union. Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, compiles it as the European Index of Consumer Prices, the whole-EU aggregate. The basic index is compiled and published on a monthly basis. It tracks household cash spending on the economic territory, meaning money actually paid for goods and services meeting direct needs.
It covers all households regardless of nationality or residence status. The common framework takes precedence over national definitions for comparability. It excludes noncash owner housing imputations, narcotics, noncash transactions, interest, capital outlays and financial assets. The monthly rate compares with the previous month directly with no seasonal adjustment.
It differs from country CPIs and from the euro-area-only MUICP. Arabic financial media use two wordings for Eurostat inflation news, one for European inflation and one for the inflation rate. The EU-wide aggregate still covers the whole Union, not the euro area alone.
