GDP Growth Rate QoQ

EU GDP Growth Rate QoQ is the percent change in European Union gross domestic product versus the previous quarter. It uses chain-linked volumes with price effects removed on seasonally adjusted data with regular seasonal patterns removed. Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, compiles it under EU accounting rules from Member State data.

It covers the economy of the European Union with 27 members in real terms only. It is not the euro area aggregate, whose figure differs in every release.

Expect four pre-announced releases for each quarter at about 30 days, about 45 days, about 65 days and about 110 days. The earliest flash publishes GDP growth rates only, while the next release adds an employment flash for total persons. The following release adds full components from output, spending and income sides plus growth contributions, and the final update completes the database.

Flash releases never revise earlier quarters, while routine revisions arrive only with the later rounds as new national data enter. Member States send estimates before each date under set deadlines, and Eurostat shares results under embargo with policy users the prior evening. The release headline is the seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter rate with the year-on-year rate shown beside it. A positive rate means expansion and a negative rate means contraction, published at one decimal.

Movements reflect computed contributions from spending and trade components, where size and growth jointly matter.

• Household and NPISH final consumption expenditure: captures spending by resident households and non-profits serving households.
• Government final consumption expenditure: captures public spending on goods and services.
• Gross fixed capital formation: captures spending on dwellings, structures, machinery and equipment.
• Changes in inventories: captures unsold stock changes and balances the spending side.
• Exports of goods and services: captures foreign demand and adds to GDP.
• Imports of goods and services: captures foreign supply and subtracts from GDP as leakage.

In one sharp collapse episode, the flash showed EU output down 11.9% on the quarter, against down 12.1% for the euro area. The EU figure was revised to down 11.4%, a move of 0.5 points that exceeded the usual 0.1 points seen in calm quarters. The next quarter rebounded 11.5% on the quarter, yet output stayed below the same quarter of the prior year.

Key point: EU growth is not euro area growth. The European Union with 27 members and the euro area cover different sets and differ in every release, and chain-linked output never sums.

1. National inputs: gather all Member State quarterly data. The flash mainly uses national GDP flash estimates plus related indicators for missing countries. Data from large states such as Germany, Spain, France and Italy are needed for reliability.
2. Aggregate estimate: build the EU quarterly movement from available indicators, weighted by reporting states.
3. Balancing: enforce accounting rules using inventories plus valuables on the spending side, operating surplus on the income side and proportional output adjustment. This works at current and previous-year prices only.
4. Chain-linking: value each quarter in previous-year prices, then link it onto the prior-year chain-linked average by annual overlap. There is no chain-linking for inventories, valuables or external balance.
5. Seasonal adjustment: aggregate national seasonally adjusted series indirectly instead of adjusting the EU series directly. Calendar correction is only partial.
6. Headline rate: divide seasonally adjusted chain-linked GDP by the prior quarter, subtract one and multiply to express as percent, published at one decimal. The release also shows the year-on-year rate versus the same quarter of the prior year.
7. Flash shortcut: approximate EU growth as national quarterly growth weighted by annual GDP. The annualised rate is about four times the quarterly rate.
