Moves come from shifts across six fuel types plus gaps across national markets, since the EU total is a straight sum. Fuel shares sum to 100% of the EU total in every release.
- Battery-electric (BEV, pure-electric cars): cars running only on batteries charged from the grid.
- Plug-in hybrid (PHEV, rechargeable hybrids): cars with an engine plus a battery charged by plug.
- Hybrid-electric (HEV, non-plug hybrids including full and mild hybrids): cars pairing an engine with a small self-charging battery.
- Petrol: cars burning petrol in an internal combustion engine with a falling share over time.
- Diesel: cars burning diesel in an internal combustion engine with a falling share over time.
- Others: fuel-cell electric vehicles, natural gas, LPG, ethanol and similar residual fuels.
In one past release registrations fell 18.3% to 643637 units from 787812 a year earlier. Germany fell 27.8% and France fell 24.3%, with Italy down 13.4% and Spain down 6.5%. Battery-electric cars fell 43.9% to 92627 units for a 14.4% share, down from 21%. The drop was led by Germany down 68.8% and France down 33.1% after purchase support ended.
Plug-in hybrids fell 22.3% while petrol fell 17.1% and diesel fell 26.4%. Hybrid-electrics were the sole gainer, up 6.6% to 201552 units for a 31.3% share, up from 24%. Year to date registrations still rose 1.4% to almost 7.2 million units, so one thin summer month hid the trend.
