The S&P Global Manufacturing PMI is a leading indicator of economic health derived from a survey of purchasing managers in the manufacturing sector. It provides an early look at business conditions, including production levels, new orders, and inventory changes. Investors watch this closely as the manufacturing sector often leads the broader economic cycle.
The index is compiled from responses to questionnaires sent to purchasing managers in around 800 manufacturers. The headline figure is a weighted average of five indices: New Orders (30%), Output (25%), Employment (20%), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15%), and Stocks of Purchases (10%).
