Full Time Employment Chg

Full Time Employment Chg is the monthly change in Canada full-time employment from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), a monthly household survey.

Full-time means persons usually working 30 hours or more per week at their main or only job, while part-time means less than 30 hours.

It covers civilians aged 15 or older in the provinces, excluding territories and about 2% in reserves, the Armed Forces and institutions.

It counts employed persons once, unlike payroll employment from employer records, and runs since 1945 with homes staying 6 months.

Responses cover the Sunday to Saturday week with the 15th, earlier in December and sometimes November.

Interviews run over the 10 days after the reference week.

Results appear in The Daily at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, normally the first Friday after the reference month.

Each release also shows total, part-time, unemployment and wage data by age, province, industry and worker type.

Seasonally adjusted figures for the past 3 years revise yearly, with census rebasing about every 5 years and redesign every 10 years.

Only moves significant at the 68% level merit focus, since monthly data vary more than trends.

Full-time gains mean more persons usually working 30 hours or more, with no boom threshold, split across groups below.

• Age and sex groups: core ages 25 to 54, youth 15 to 24 and ages 55 or older show who drives change.

On July 7, 2023, June 2023 employment rose 60,000 (+0.3%) to 20,173,000, all in full-time work (+110,000; +0.7%) as part-time fell 50,000 (-1.4%).

The unemployment rate still rose 0.2 points to 5.4%, while the employment rate edged up to 62.2%.

The reference week was June 11 to 17, 2023, and more people searched for work, so employment and unemployment rose together.

Ontario added 56,000 (+0.7%) and core-aged men added 31,000, showing how province and age splits explain the move.

1. Classify by usual hours: each employed person is full-time at 30 hours or more at the main or only job, else part-time.

Employees use normal paid hours excluding overtime, while variable hours average the past 4 weeks.

Canada totals sum the adjusted age and sex groups, removing reference-week calendar effects.

1. Take the monthly change: subtract the prior adjusted level from the new one, in thousands of persons.

Divide by the prior level to get percent change: 16,610.0 minus 16,500.0 gives +110.0 thousand, about +0.7%.

Key point: it counts persons by usual hours at the main job, not employer jobs, so a switch to full-time lifts it with no hiring.

The cutoff is 30 hours, not 40.
