About This Indicator

Description

The Export Price Index measures the change in the prices of all exports of merchandise from Australia. It provides a key insight into the country's terms of trade and the inflationary pressures originating from the export sector. A rising index suggests increasing demand for Australian goods or higher global commodity prices, which is generally seen as bullish for the Australian Dollar. It is a significant indicator for assessing the health of the trade-dependent Australian economy.

Methodology

Calculated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) using a Fisher Ideal index formula. It tracks price changes for a fixed basket of exported goods, weighted by their significance in the previous year's trade data.
