The Westpac Consumer Confidence Change measures the month-over-month percentage change in the level of consumer confidence in economic activity. It is a leading indicator as it can predict consumer spending, which accounts for a majority of overall economic activity. A higher reading indicates greater consumer optimism, which typically translates to increased retail sales and economic growth in Australia.
The index is based on a survey of approximately 1,200 households across Australia. It is calculated by taking the average of five component indexes that cover personal finances, economic conditions over the next year and five years, and whether it is a good time to buy major household items.
