20 billion dollars did not disappear from OpenAI’s revenue: why did the market punish weaker balance sheets?
OpenAI told investors its run-rate revenue had reached about 50 billion dollars, days after reports put it at 70 billion, sending AI infrastructure stocks lower in afternoon trading. The gap reflects how sales through cloud partners are counted, rather than revenue that disappeared. Our analysis shows the market sold equipment and left applications alone, with the harshest punishment falling on companies with weaker balance sheets.

Executive summary
On Thursday 8 October 2026, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI had told investors its annualised revenue (Run-Rate Revenue), an estimate of full-year revenue based on the current sales pace, approached 50 billion dollars at the end of September. Reports in late September had put it at about 70 billion. AI infrastructure stocks fell in the afternoon: CoreWeave by 7.77%, Oracle by 5.48%, Broadcom by 4.35% and NVIDIA by 2.94%.
We analysed the session’s price moves using EL7’s price database and reviewed reporting on the two figures, finding four results:
The gap does not mean revenue disappeared. According to the Financial Times and Reuters, the difference reflects how sales are counted. Anthropic, the closest competitor, counts sales through cloud partners, platforms that sell their customers access to its models, such as AWS and Google Cloud, while OpenAI excludes them. The higher figure came from an attempt to compare the two companies on a common counting basis. Bloomberg reported the following day that OpenAI expects to reach 70 billion on its own basis by year-end.
The decline came in the afternoon. During the session, most of the declines in Oracle, Micron, Broadcom and NVIDIA came after 12:30 New York time, while bonds rose throughout the day. Oracle shares also came under pressure that day from a second news story concerning the company.
The market sold equipment and left applications alone. Major software stocks rose in the same session, including Adobe by 3.56% and Salesforce by 1.44%.
Weaker balance sheets suffered the heaviest losses. Across 17 infrastructure stocks, the three weakest on the safety axis of the EL7 score, which measures balance-sheet resilience to shocks, fell by an average of 6.87%, versus 3.31% for the ten strongest. The growth axis showed no relationship with the size of the decline.
The sell-off began in the afternoon, not at the open
