Core Natural Resources Approves Quarterly Dividend of $0.10 Per Share in 2026
Key Facts
Core Natural Resources’ board approved a quarterly cash dividend of $0.10 per share, payable on December 15, 2026, to shareholders of record on November 30, according to the company’s results released on November 5. The announcement came as the company reported free cash flow of $80.3 million in the third quarter. Its capital return policy targets returning about 75% of free cash flow to shareholders. The company says most of the capital returned is directed to share buybacks, alongside an ongoing quarterly dividend. The announced dividend therefore adds to the capital return mechanism the company has tied to its cash flows.
Net cash generated from operating activities totaled $174.6 million in the third quarter, while free cash flow reached $80.3 million, according to the company’s statement. This cash flow provides a numerical basis for the announced dividend and the returns framework, which targets returning about 75% of free cash flow. But the statement makes clear that the framework is not limited to dividends: share repurchases account for most of the capital return, while the ongoing quarterly dividend complements that approach. The announcement did not specify an amount of total free cash flow allocated to the dividend. The available information also did not state the value of share repurchases during the third quarter.
Core reported third-quarter net income of $9.0 million, diluted earnings of $0.18 per share, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $165.2 million, and revenue of $1.1 billion. The company attributed the weaker comparison with the previous quarter to normal geological variability and weather-related shipment delays. In metallurgical coal, realized coal revenue per ton rose 5% quarter on quarter, while cash cost per ton increased 8%. The company said the cost increase was partly linked to a short-term rise in contract labor use. Storms also delayed the loading of two higher-value vessels until early October, affecting metallurgical coal sales recorded during the quarter.
The capital return policy reflects a course that began before the third-quarter results. In its second-quarter results update, Core said it had returned about 80% of its free cash flow to shareholders since the program began in February 2025, and had $670.8 million remaining under its share repurchase authorization on June 30, 2026. The company said at the time that the market was relatively weak, while expecting market dynamics to improve in the second half of the year. In its third-quarter results, the company set out its target framework of returning about 75% of free cash flow and confirmed that the quarterly dividend would continue as part of a mix that includes share repurchases. The remaining authorization figure is a snapshot dated at the end of June, while the newer framework concerns cash flows and the return policy announced in the third-quarter results.
On future sales, Core said it had secured new commitments totaling 29.4 million tons for delivery in later periods. These included 2.4 million tons of contracted metallurgical coal for delivery in 2027 to customers in North America. The company said the average fixed price for these commitments is above the average for commitments recorded last year. These commitments will be fulfilled in future periods, while the dividend announcement sets near-term dates for eligibility and payment: eligible shareholders must be registered on November 30, followed by payment on December 15, 2026. CNR shares closed at $75.21 on November 5, the date the results and dividend were announced.
