Charter Communications said on November 6, 2026, that it is targeting operating expense savings at an annual rate of $2 billion within 18 months, alongside expected synergies of more than $1 billion from the Cox deal. The announcement combines two separate targets: a new cost-cutting program and deal-related savings, neither of which has yet been fully realized as a financial result. The company says its new operating model focuses on accelerating internet customer acquisition and improving retention and satisfaction. The announcement comes as its residential internet business faces pressure reflected in third-quarter revenue. Charter says the initiatives are expected to support higher free cash flow over time.

Charter said the program will include eliminating unnecessary activities, simplifying organizational structures and increasing efficiency through vendor partnerships. The announcement sets an 18-month timeframe for reaching the targeted annual savings rate of $2 billion. Expected synergies from Cox exceed $1 billion and are in addition to the new target, rather than part of it. The announced savings framework therefore has two separate tracks, one tied to internal operating changes and the other to the acquisition. The company linked these initiatives to improving free cash flow in the future, without reporting a realized result from the program.

Charter completed its Cox transactions on August 19, 2026, adding more than 11 million passings and more than 5 million customer relationships. The deal expanded the company's presence in markets including Phoenix and Las Vegas, as well as integrated markets across the country. Charter said these areas offer opportunities to increase penetration of its services among residential customers and small businesses. The broader footprint gives the company a larger base on which to apply its announced operating model, while growth in internet customers and retention remains a stated objective. The company says the deal-related synergies, which exceed $1 billion, are separate from the newly targeted operating savings.

Charter's third-quarter pro forma revenue was $16.5 billion, down 1.5% from the same period a year earlier. The company attributed the decline mainly to lower residential revenue, including video and internet. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were $6.6 billion on the same basis, down 4.0% year over year. The company also reported a pro forma net loss attributable to shareholders of $2.1 billion. It said the main factor behind the loss was a $6.3 billion impairment of franchise assets.

Pro forma capital expenditures in the third quarter were $3.2 billion, compared with $3.6 billion in the same period a year earlier. Actual free cash flow, meanwhile, was $674 million, down $947 million year over year. Charter attributed the decline mainly to lower cash flow from operations and an unfavorable change in accrued capital expenditures. The figures put the new savings target in the context of falling quarterly cash flow, while the company describes the initiatives' impact on cash flow as expected over time. Charter shares closed at $125.86 on November 5, according to EL7 data.

Charter lost 172,000 internet customers in the second quarter of 2026, compared with a decline of 116,000 in the second quarter of 2025. The company said its new operating model aims to return internet customer numbers to growth, strengthen its core offerings, and improve retention and customer satisfaction. The Cox deal broadens its reach in markets where the company sees opportunities to increase residential and small-business penetration. On October 3, an earlier EL7 report said Charter's financial priority had shifted toward debt reduction rather than share buybacks. The company is scheduled to host a webcast on its results announcement on November 6, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern time.
