Broadcom Discloses Potential $43 Billion Guarantee in Anthropic Computing Financing

Key Facts

1Broadcom estimated its maximum potential undiscounted liability at about $43 billion when the racks are deployed.
2The financial institutions announced a $63 billion financing deal to provide AI computing capacity to Anthropic.
3Potential exposure is calculated as 72.5% of lease amounts due minus the value of recovered racks.
4Equipment deliveries are expected to begin during 2027.

In a disclosure dated October 27, Broadcom revealed a conditional support commitment that could reach about $43 billion, tied to a special-purpose financing vehicle that buys AI computing equipment and then leases it to Anthropic. The disclosure is part of a $63 billion financing deal announced by Bank of America, Blackstone, Citi and Morgan Stanley on October 26 to provide AI computing capacity using Broadcom technology. The company said its maximum potential liability, on an undiscounted basis, is about $43 billion when the AI racks are deployed. That puts a substantial contingent commitment on the company within the deal structure, with its value tied to asset delivery milestones and the lessee’s repayment of its obligations. Broadcom made the disclosure a day after the financial institutions announced the deal.

According to the joint statement, a special-purpose company will buy XPU accelerators and networking solutions from Broadcom, then lease them to Anthropic. Deliveries are expected to begin during 2027, meaning the equipment deployment and related commitment will be phased in as implementation progresses. The announced deal value of $63 billion differs from the potential support amount of about $43 billion: the former is the value of the announced financing, while the latter is Broadcom’s undiscounted liability cap when the racks are deployed. The company said total support "increases as AI racks are delivered and deployed, and decreases as the customer pays its lease obligations." This means the scale of potential exposure is tied to implementation and collection progress, rather than to a fixed amount that becomes fully payable upon announcement.

Broadcom explained that its calculation of potential liability is based on the difference between 72.5% of the amounts due under the lease and the value of the AI racks that could be recovered by selling the assets after a default. The calculation therefore includes what remains due from the customer, alongside the value realized from the recovered equipment. The company said the guarantee is "a contingent obligation that the company believes is unlikely to be realized." Its assessment was based on expectations for the customer’s profitability and the value of the underlying assets, according to the disclosure. This assessment describes the company’s view of the likelihood that the obligation will be triggered, while the amount calculation remains tied to lease payments and the value of the assets upon sale.

The latest deal follows Broadcom’s launch of the AI XPV platform in June 2026 with an initial tranche valued at $35 billion. At the time, the company estimated its maximum liability for guaranteeing that tranche at about $29 billion until all racks were deployed. That earlier tranche provides context for the expansion of the guarantee-backed financing model for AI equipment, while the current disclosure concerns a new deal with a separate potential support amount. In results for the third quarter of its 2026 fiscal year, Broadcom said AI-related semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion, up 221% year over year and 54% quarter over quarter. The company thereby links growth in its chip business with expanding demand for infrastructure that includes accelerators and networking. It also said the AI XPV platform was established to enable deployment of more than 20 gigawatts of computing capacity through its custom accelerators and networking through 2028, serving advanced AI labs.

In the market, Broadcom shares rose 4% in the October 27 session after the financing deal was announced, according to Associated Press. On November 5, the stock closed at $291.53, according to EL7 data. DA Davidson’s upgrade of the stock from "Neutral" to "Buy" and its $400 price target were reported by Newsquawk on October 27, and do not relate to the November 5 closing session. In its forecast for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, Broadcom said it expects AI semiconductor revenue to accelerate to $21.7 billion, up 236% year over year. The start of deliveries in 2027 remains the deal’s next announced milestone, while the company has set 2028 as the horizon for the AI XPV platform.
