Zcash NU7 Upgrade to Freeze $16 Million in Legacy Sprout Pool
Key Facts
Zcash is proceeding with its NU7 network upgrade which will permanently freeze approximately 12,200 ZEC tokens, valued at $16 million, remaining in the legacy Sprout pool. Crypto Briefing reported that these balances will become unusable once the blockchain reaches block height 3,543,405, as the upgrade disables the transaction types required to access the original 2016 privacy pool.
Roughly 10,000 coins exited the pool over the past week as holders migrated funds, though the outflow slowed significantly on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. While the frozen ZEC will remain part of the total supply, it will be effectively removed from circulation; however, newer privacy pools including Sapling and Orchard will continue to function normally following the NU7 activation.
