SM Energy reported third-quarter results on Nov. 3, posting $1.1 billion in cash flow from operating activities, while adjusted free cash flow was $397 million. Net income was $93 million, or $0.39 per diluted share, while adjusted net income reached $465 million, or $1.95 per share. Before the results were announced, Reuters reported that analysts’ average estimate was $1.88 per share, putting adjusted earnings per share above that estimate. Adjusted EBITDAX was about $1.3 billion in the quarter. At the same time, the company announced a 1% cut to its annual oil production guidance, while maintaining its total annual production range at 420–422 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Capital expenditures were $711 million in the quarter, or $747 million before the effect of changes in accruals. Adjusted free cash flow of $397 million came after this spending, and the company allocated part of it to returning capital to shareholders. SM Energy returned a total of $133 million, or about 34% of adjusted free cash flow. This included repurchases of 2.3 million shares for $81 million, along with a quarterly cash dividend of $0.22 per share. These figures show two parallel uses of cash during the quarter: investment in assets and returns to shareholders.

The company reduced net debt to $6.0 billion on Sept. 30, compared with $7.4 billion on March 31, 2026. It repaid the full principal on $417 million of senior notes due in 2027, at par. The company said the repayment means it has no debt maturities until mid-2028. That puts the next maturity about two years after the results announcement, according to the schedule provided by the company. The debt reduction came alongside the return of $133 million to shareholders and capital spending during the quarter.

SM Energy attributed the cut to its annual oil guidance to operational and logistical factors that affected third-quarter volumes. It said downtime in the Permian Basin above plan, related to compliance and safety work and temporarily shutting in wells during simultaneous operations, reduced oil production by about 2 thousand barrels per day. It added that transportation constraints in the Uinta Basin amounted to about 4 thousand barrels per day. The company cut its 2026 oil production guidance by 1% to 220–222 thousand barrels per day, while narrowing its annual total production range to 420–422 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day. It said expected annual capital expenditures were about $2.75 billion.

The company expects fourth-quarter production to range from 435 thousand to 445 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, including 229 thousand to 239 thousand barrels of oil per day. It estimated fourth-quarter capital expenditures at about $610 million. The company said the factors that affected third-quarter volumes in the Permian have been addressed. It expects the transportation constraints in the Uinta Basin to be resolved in early 2027. The fourth-quarter guidance range therefore reflects expected improvement in the impact of operational factors in the Permian, while Uinta constraints are expected to continue until their anticipated resolution.

On the integration front, SM Energy said it had activated run-rate savings of about $400 million from the Civitas merger. That is double the original target of $200 million and exceeds the revised target of $375 million by $25 million. The net present value of the savings, under the company’s stated NPV-10 measure, also rose to $2.0 billion from $1.8 billion. This progress puts merger savings above the revised target, alongside a cut to annual oil production guidance and a higher estimate of annual capital expenditures of about $2.75 billion. The prior earnings comparison refers to the second quarter, when adjusted net income was $2.19 per share, according to Reuters.

Derivative losses on the income statement totaled $684 million in the third quarter, compared with a loss of $45 million in the same period of 2025. The average realized oil price before the effect of derivative settlements was $85.76 per barrel, down 11% from $96.85 in the second quarter. This comparison adds to the financial and operational results reported by the company, alongside net income, cash flow and capital expenditures. SM Energy is scheduled to hold its earnings call and webcast on Nov. 4, 2026, at 8 a.m. Mountain Time, or 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The call will give the company an opportunity to present details of its quarterly results and outlook for the coming period.
