Seaboard Profit Falls to $28 Million in Third Quarter Despite Sales Growth
Key Facts
Seaboard announced on November 3 results for the three months ended October 3, 2026, reporting net earnings attributable to the company of $28 million, compared with $109 million in the same period of 2025. The sharp decline in earnings came despite net sales rising to $2.771 billion from $2.540 billion. The figures put the contrast between sales growth and lower profitability at the forefront of the company's quarterly results. Operating income also fell to $13 million, compared with $84 million a year earlier. The results announcement available did not explain the reasons for the declines in operating income and earnings.
The decline in earnings was also reflected in earnings per common share, which were $29.23 in the third quarter, compared with $113.71 in the same period a year earlier. The average number of shares outstanding was 957,794, compared with 958,618 a year earlier. The comparison shows that the average share count was similar in the two periods, while earnings attributable to the company and earnings per share fell. By contrast, quarterly sales increased from $2.540 billion to $2.771 billion. Thus, revenue growth coincided with declines in operating income and net earnings in the period ended October 3.
The picture for the first nine months of the year differed from the result for the quarter alone. Seaboard reported net sales of $8.093 billion in the period ended October 3, 2026, compared with $7.336 billion in the corresponding nine months of 2025. Net earnings attributable to the company were about $300 million, compared with $243 million in the prior period. Sales and earnings therefore increased on a cumulative basis, despite the clear decline in third-quarter earnings. The comparison provides context for reading the results: the weak quarter did not erase the growth in sales and earnings recorded from the start of the year through October 3.
Previous annual results provide additional context for the company's performance swings across periods. In its 2025 report, Seaboard said annual net sales were $9.8 billion, compared with $9.1 billion in 2024, while operating income was $239 million, compared with $156 million. In its report for the third quarter of 2025, the company said operating income had risen $52 million from the same period of 2024, attributing the increase mainly to improved margins on pork products and hogs sold. Pork segment income rose $46 million at the time. The company also attributed that quarter's sales increase to higher sales in the CT&M segment of $235 million, the marine segment of $51 million, and the pork segment of $41 million. These figures relate to earlier periods and do not, by themselves, explain the decline recorded in the third quarter of 2026.
In its 2025 annual filing, Seaboard described its operations as highly commodity-oriented and said the financial performance of some subsidiaries is cyclical and affected by global commodity-market trends. During the second quarter of 2026, the company said a conflict involving Iran that began in late February had led to higher fuel prices and shipping costs, increased commodity-market volatility and economic uncertainty. In the same period, it said a $79 million increase in liquid fuels segment income partly offset a $37 million decline in marine segment income due to higher voyage costs. Management also budgeted about $305 million in capital spending for the remainder of 2026, including about $60 million to build a barge in the energy segment. These disclosures remain dated background from previous reports, while the third-quarter results announcement did not state the reasons for the fall in profitability.
Seaboard's board approved a quarterly cash dividend of $2.25 per share, the same amount announced in the corresponding period of 2025. The company set November 13, 2026, as the record date for eligible shareholders, with the dividend to be paid on November 23. The dividend announcement came alongside quarterly results showing net earnings attributable to the company had fallen from $109 million to $28 million. In the stock market, Seaboard shares, trading under the ticker SEB, closed at $3,733.72 on November 2, 2026. That closing price is dated one day before the results announcement, and the available information does not include a later share price or market movement after the announcement.
