Japan Sales Suspension Threatens About $140 Million in Prudential Operating Income
Key Facts
Prudential Financial plans to report its third-quarter 2026 results after the market closes on November 3, with attention focused on the impact of a sales suspension on its business in Japan. In a preliminary disclosure dated October 15, the company estimated that the suspension reduced Japan business unit adjusted pre-tax operating income by about $140 million in the quarter ended September 30. The estimate includes one-time costs related mainly to compensation for life planners, as well as lost sales and the effect of policy surrenders. Ahead of the results, analysts expected earnings of $3.45 per share and revenue of $15.1 billion for the quarter. Management is scheduled to review the results on a conference call on November 4 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
The Japanese restrictions reflect regulatory pressure on the company's activities in the country: Japan's Financial Services Agency extended the period during which Prudential of Japan cannot solicit new business through January 31, 2027. A partial suspension also applies to Gibraltar Life's life-planner channel through the same date. The company said its Japanese entities will submit business improvement plans to the agency by the end of November 2026. The estimated financial impact comes in this context, linking the sales halt with compensation costs, missed sales opportunities and policy surrenders. The upcoming results call gives management an opportunity to provide details on operating performance under these restrictions.
Prudential reported adjusted after-tax operating income of $1.438 billion, or $4.08 per share, in the second quarter of 2026, compared with $1.284 billion and $3.58 per share in the second quarter of 2025. Those figures provide a basis for comparison with the awaited third-quarter results, while analysts' estimates of $3.45 per share and $15.1 billion in revenue remain pre-announcement expectations. In asset management, the preliminary disclosure showed PGIM assets under management of $1.47 trillion on September 30, 2026. The company said the unit formerly called International Businesses was renamed Japan Businesses starting in the third quarter. Activities including the Brazil and Mexico operations were also moved to discontinued and held-for-sale businesses within the Corporate and Other segment.
In a separate development in the reshaping of its international businesses, Prudential announced an agreement to sell its operations in Brazil and Mexico to CNP Assurances for $4.025 billion in cash, subject to adjustments at closing. The company expects to complete the transaction in the second half of 2027, subject to customary conditions and regulatory approvals. The businesses involved are among the changes the company said it made to its segment classifications during the third quarter. In Japan, the next specified step is the business improvement plans to be submitted to the agency by the end of November 2026. The third-quarter results review call is scheduled for November 4 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
