Metro Bank Shares Jump 13% After Reaching Net Interest Margin Target and Reaffirming 2028 Goals
Key Facts
Metro Bank shares rose 13% on Wednesday, November 4, after the British bank said its structural net interest margin had reached its full-year target ahead of schedule and reaffirmed profitability targets through 2028, according to Investing.com. The move followed an update that combined achievement of the annual margin target with the retention of previously set return forecasts. The report said all forecasts were reaffirmed, including tangible returns on equity above 13% in the fourth quarter of 2026, 15% in 2027 and 18% in 2028. The bank thus linked its update to early achievement of the margin target and a return trajectory extending into subsequent years. The report did not provide details on the trading session or broader market moves.
The bank set tangible returns on equity at more than 13% in the fourth quarter of 2026, then more than 15% in 2027 and more than 18% in 2028. These targets show a phased increase in expected returns over the period for which the bank reaffirmed its plan. The report said all forecasts were reaffirmed, meaning the November 4 announcement did not include a new increase to these targets. The achievement reported in the update was reaching the full-year structural net interest margin target, according to the bank. The report thus distinguished between the margin result already achieved and the future profitability targets that remained in place.
The bank attributed the expected further improvement to the maturity of interest-bearing assets and the continued rotation of its asset portfolio. It said these factors provide a path to further improvement in margin and earnings in the fourth quarter of 2026 and during 2027. The outlook follows achievement of the annual margin target ahead of year-end, according to the update reported by Investing.com. Chief Executive Daniel Frumkin said the 3.45% exit margin demonstrated "the quality and speed of the balance sheet rotation the bank has executed." Frumkin linked the figure to the speed and quality of the rotation, while the bank identified asset maturities and continued rotation as drivers of further improvement.
On lending, loans in target sectors rose to 6.62 billion pounds through the third quarter of 2026, up 37% year on year and 7% from the previous quarter. These sectors include business and commercial lending, small and medium-sized enterprises, and specialist mortgages. Over the same period, the balance of loans in run-off fell 32% to 2.81 billion pounds. Total gross loans rose 5% year on year to 9.43 billion pounds. The figures combine growth in lending to target areas with a decline in the run-off portfolio, alongside an increase in total loans compared with the previous year.
By contrast, customer deposits fell 1% year on year to 13.03 billion pounds through the third quarter of 2026 and were also 1% below their level in the first half. The bank attributed this to its active management of surplus high-cost deposits not linked to customer relationships, despite growth in personal and business current account balances. The loan-to-deposit ratio was 71%, compared with 67% a year earlier and 69% in the first half of 2026. The comparison reflects a higher ratio than in the two preceding periods alongside the reported decline in deposits. The bank provided an explanation for the deposit change alongside lending growth data and the development of its loan-to-deposit ratio.
Credit loss provisions fell 23% to 131 million pounds through the third quarter of 2026, compared with 171 million a year earlier. The bank said credit quality remained strong, with arrears declining and the portfolio supported by a high level of property collateral. The decline in provisions coincided with growth in total loans and lending in target sectors over the same period. The bank's statement on collateral said the portfolio was largely backed by property, alongside lower arrears. Its outlook for the coming period concerns a path to improvement in margin and earnings in the fourth quarter of 2026 and during 2027, supported by asset maturities and continued portfolio rotation.
