Cenovus Reports C$5.023 Billion in Adjusted Funds Flow in Third Quarter
Key Facts
Cenovus Energy reported adjusted funds flow of C$5.023 billion and free funds flow of C$3.569 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to the company’s results. Upstream production reached 1,023.5 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, its highest quarterly level. Adjusted funds flow was slightly above C$4.986 billion in the second quarter, while free funds flow declined from C$3.786 billion. This puts record production alongside a decline in free cash generated compared with the previous quarter. The company’s shares, CVE, closed at $30.74 on November 3, 2026, according to EL7 data.
Upstream production rose from 970.4 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in the second quarter to 1,023.5 thousand in the third quarter. Cenovus said improved well-pad performance at Narrows Lake and progress on its drilling program supported production at Christina Lake. This performance offset the impact of maintenance work that was completed ahead of schedule, the company said. It also attributed higher production at Foster Creek to the resumption of operations after an unplanned outage in May and the ongoing production improvement project expansion. The new production level represents an increase from the previous quarter, after the company raised its 2026 annual production guidance range in July to 970–1,010 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Cenovus announced in July that it had raised both the floor and ceiling of its 2026 upstream production guidance by 25 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day and reduced its oil sands operating cost estimate by about 6%. Average annual production was 834.2 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025, compared with 797.2 thousand in 2024, while oil sands production was 644.1 thousand in 2025. This context indicates growth in the production base ahead of the record quarterly level in the third quarter. In the second quarter of 2026, the company generated about C$5.0 billion in adjusted funds flow and C$3.8 billion in free funds flow, with upstream production at 970.4 thousand. Refinery utilization was 95% that quarter.
In estimates issued before the results, analysts expected earnings of $1.04 per share and revenue of $11.65 billion for the third quarter, according to an Investing.com report attributed to Reuters. The report compared those estimates with second-quarter earnings of $1.53 per share and revenue of $12.57 billion, pointing to an expected sequential decline. It also said earnings-per-share estimates had risen by more than 50% in the preceding sixty days, while revenue estimates had increased 9.25% over the same period. The report said investors were watching the impact of a widening discount on Canadian heavy crude on profitability despite record production volumes. By contrast, actual adjusted funds flow in the third quarter was slightly above the previous quarter, while free funds flow declined.
Cenovus attributed part of its upstream performance to improved operations at Christina Lake and Foster Creek, while the pre-results report described the widening discount on Canadian heavy crude as a test of profitability. The reported data did not include a quantitative figure for the crude discount or for upstream and refining margins in the third quarter. On October 5, the company announced an agreement to acquire Athabasca Oil in a cash-and-share transaction with an implied enterprise value of C$5.7 billion. Cenovus said it expects to complete the transaction in December 2026, subject to customary approvals and conditions. The deal links the current quarter’s results to an anticipated expansion ahead of year-end.
Cenovus expects preliminary net debt at the end of 2026 to range from C$5.0 billion to C$5.5 billion after the transaction, based on forward market prices as of September 30. It said the expected ratio of net debt to adjusted funds flow would remain below 0.5 times. On shareholder returns, the company announced a quarterly base dividend of C$0.22 per share. It is scheduled to be paid on December 31 to shareholders of record on December 15, 2026. The dividend schedule gives shareholders a specific payment date alongside the expected completion of the acquisition in December.
