Talen Revenue Jumps to $1.327 Billion in Third Quarter of 2026
Key Facts
Talen Energy said on November 3 that operating revenue reached $1.327 billion in the three months ended September 30, 2026, compared with $812 million in the same period a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA rose to $669 million from $363 million, while adjusted free cash flow increased to $433 million from $223 million. But net income under U.S. accounting standards attributable to shareholders fell to $138 million from $207 million. The company reaffirmed the midpoint of its 2026 guidance while narrowing the ranges, and issued financial ranges for 2027 for the first time. The results combine improvements in adjusted operating metrics with a decline in accounting net income, while management said next year's outlook is based on PJM market fundamentals and a full-year contribution from recently acquired assets.
The company attributed the $306 million year-over-year increase in third-quarter adjusted EBITDA mainly to contributions from acquired generation facilities, higher settled power prices and increased generation volumes after realized hedges. It added that higher capacity revenues also supported the result. Talen said, however, that operating gains were insufficient to offset unrealized losses from marking commodity derivatives to market, along with higher interest expense related to acquisition financing. The two factors contributed to the decline in accounting net income compared with the third quarter of 2025. Chief Executive Mac McFarland said the 2027 outlook reflects "strong PJM fundamentals and a full-year contribution from our recently acquired assets."
For 2026, Talen kept the midpoint of its adjusted EBITDA guidance at the previously announced level and narrowed the range to $2.05–$2.20 billion. It set adjusted free cash flow guidance for that year at $1.225 billion to $1.325 billion. The 2027 guidance puts adjusted EBITDA at $2.50 billion to $2.85 billion and adjusted free cash flow at $1.50 billion to $1.75 billion. The company said the midpoints of the new ranges represent growth of about 26% in adjusted EBITDA and 27% in adjusted free cash flow compared with 2026 guidance. McFarland linked the outlook to strong PJM fundamentals and the full-year impact of assets added to the company's portfolio through acquisitions.
To manage its exposure to energy prices, Talen said it had hedged, as of September 30, about 80% of expected generation between October and December 2026, about 70% of expected generation in 2027, and 35% in 2028. These percentages include the effect of the nuclear production tax credit. The company reported available liquidity of about $1.6 billion on October 30, including $220 million in unrestricted cash and $1.4 billion of availability under its revolving credit facility. On share repurchases, it announced a $1.5 billion accelerated program and raised its total repurchase authorization to $3.0 billion through December 31, 2028. The company expects the accelerated program to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
Talen said it intends to fund the accelerated repurchase program primarily by monetizing about $1.5 billion in capacity revenues cleared in the PJM market, tied to the 2027/2028 and 2028/2029 delivery years. This places future capacity revenues within the capital allocation plan announced by the company, alongside the available liquidity it disclosed on October 30. In July 2025, the company said it had secured 6,702 megawatts in the capacity auction for planning year 2026/2027, at a clearing price of $329.17 per megawatt-day, equivalent to about $805 million in capacity revenues for that year. As a follow-up to the results, the investor relations calendar scheduled the third-quarter earnings conference for November 3 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern time. The stock closed at $332.99 on November 2, the day before the results were announced.
