Shotwell: More than 2 Million SpaceX Shares to Be Distributed to Eligible Children in December
Key Facts
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the company will distribute more than 2 million shares to eligible children through Trump Accounts in December 2026. Reuters quoted her as saying, "More than 2 million shares of the company will be distributed to eligible children through Trump Accounts in December." The first distribution targets children who meet specific age, income and location requirements, so it does not include all account holders. The shares were being transferred to an escrow account at the time of the report. Eligible families are expected to receive notice by Monday, according to Shotwell.
The initial distribution is limited to children aged 11 to 17 who live in areas where median household income is $57,000 or less. Shotwell said the shares were "currently being transferred to an escrow account" before distribution. Eligibility also includes children who live in ZIP codes where there are too few residents to publish median household income data. This extends the eligibility criteria to those areas despite the absence of a published income figure for them. The available information did not specify how many children would benefit from the distribution or how many shares each child would receive.
SpaceX is working on a separate gift expected to be completed in the following weeks, covering eligible children in military families serving outside the United States and children in foster care. It also includes children in eligible Texas counties, provided household income does not exceed $90,000. This distribution will be in addition to the one scheduled for December, with different beneficiary groups and an income limit applying to Texas families. Shotwell did not set a final date for completing the additional gift. The announced timeline remains the following weeks, while she said families eligible for the first distribution would be notified by Monday.
The gifts fall under Trump Accounts, tax-advantaged investment accounts for American children under 18. Claiming the account is required to receive the initial one-time Treasury contribution of $1,000. The Treasury Department said on 1 October 2026 that automatic enrollment had made an account ready to claim available to more than 60 million additional eligible children. The Treasury had said that claiming an account was a condition for receiving its $1,000 contribution. On 31 March 2026, the Internal Revenue Service reported that more than 4 million children had been enrolled in the accounts and that more than 1 million children were included in applications for the pilot program's $1,000 contribution.
The IRS says the accounts are a new type of individual retirement account for eligible children. The one-time government contribution of $1,000 may cover citizen children born between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2028 who have a valid Social Security number. Contributions to the accounts began being accepted on 4 July 2026, under IRS rules. The annual limit for non-exempt contributions is $5,000 in 2026 and 2027. Some types of exempt contributions do not count toward this limit, according to the IRS's 2025 internal bulletin.
SpaceX has been publicly listed since its initial public offering on 12 June 2026, according to its investor relations page. Its shares trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and Nasdaq Texas under the ticker SPCX. EL7 data showed the stock's daily close fell from $146.9 on 26 October to $134.72 on 30 October. Between those dates, it closed at $148.58 on 27 October, then $145.23 on 28 October and $143.89 on 29 October. The closing prices thus declined on each day from 27 to 30 October, with the data not linking this trend to the donation announcement.
