Red Robin Comparable Sales Rise 3.9% as Company Refinances $115 Million Credit Facility
Key Facts
On November 2, Red Robin announced preliminary, unaudited results showing comparable restaurant revenue rose 3.9% in the 12 weeks ended October 4, 2026. Growth accelerated from a 1.3% increase in the 12 weeks ended July 12, according to the company’s statement. The increase came in the third fiscal quarter as customer traffic fell 1.7% year over year. By contrast, the average guest check rose 5.6% over the same period. The divergence highlights the reliance of revenue growth on higher spending per visit, while customer counts remained below their level a year earlier.
The company attributed part of the sales growth to its Big Yummm value platform, launched in July 2025. The CEO said the platform "offers an affordable price point while maintaining the Red Robin experience," citing its success as a factor supporting comparable sales. This puts pricing and value at the center of the explanation for restaurant performance during the quarter, alongside the increase in the average check. In its second-quarter results, the company reported comparable sales rose 1.3%, while total revenue was $277.6 million, compared with $283.7 million in the same period of 2025. At the time, it maintained its fiscal 2026 outlook and said it would update it after completing the refranchising transactions, as the outlook did not include their impact.
Alongside its sales performance, Red Robin completed the refranchising of 108 company-owned restaurants through three transactions that generated aggregate cash proceeds of approximately $89.4 million, before customary adjustments. The transactions included the sale of 30 restaurants to Evergreen Dining LLC, 61 restaurants to Op Burgers, LLC, and 17 restaurants to Kuber Oregon LLC and Kuber Washington LLC. The company said proceeds from the transactions were used to reduce outstanding debt and support the refinancing, and that transferring the units to franchise operators expands the base of franchisee-operated restaurants. Red Robin said in the second quarter that its guidance did not include the impact of the refranchising transactions and that it expected to update it after the transactions closed. The company is expected to present its final results and fiscal-year outlook on the new date set for investors.
On October 2, the company completed the refinancing of its secured credit facility with a new five-year agreement valued at $115 million. The agreement includes a $25 million revolving credit line and a $90 million term loan. Interest-rate margins on the loan and revolving line range from 275 to 350 basis points over SOFR, depending on the leverage ratio, with no SOFR floor; the initial margin was 325 basis points over SOFR. Red Robin said proceeds from the refranchising transactions helped reduce debt and support the refinancing on terms it described as attractive. Under the agreement’s terms, the new facility replaced the previous credit agreement, and its proceeds will be used to repay prior borrowings, fees and related expenses, as well as support working capital and the company’s general needs.
Red Robin postponed its third-quarter results announcement and investor conference from November 4 to November 18, saying the delay would allow it to complete accounting and valuation analyses related to the refranchising transactions and refinancing. The company said the delay was not related to a material change in its financial condition or operating results. In its notice to the Securities and Exchange Commission, management said the transactions would have a material impact on results but that it could not estimate their effect on quarterly results compared with the prior year before the analyses were complete. The company set November 18 for the results announcement and investor conference, where it will also discuss its fiscal 2026 outlook. Management expects to file the quarterly Form 10-Q within the statutory five-calendar-day extension period after the deadline and did not say it would be released on November 18.
The company said in its refinancing announcement that the completion of the sale of an additional eight restaurants under the Op Burgers agreement was expected before the end of fiscal 2026, with gross proceeds of approximately $6.6 million. The announcement estimated that the transaction would bring total proceeds from the sale of 116 restaurants to approximately $96 million. These figures come as the company shifts toward a model that relies more heavily on franchisee-owned restaurants, while using sale proceeds to reduce borrowings. Completion of the accounting and valuation analyses related to the transactions is tied to preparing final third-quarter results, according to the company’s notice. Investors are looking to the November 18 presentation of results and an updated fiscal-year outlook, while the Form 10-Q filing remains subject to the extension period cited by management.
