MSA Safety Posts Adjusted EPS of $2.09 Despite Lower Net Income
Key Facts
MSA Safety reported third-quarter results, posting adjusted diluted EPS of $2.09, up 8% from $1.94 in the year-ago period, while adjusted earnings rose to $80.6 million, up 6%. By contrast, GAAP net income fell to $58.4 million from $69.6 million, and diluted EPS declined to $1.51 from $1.77. The company said costs related to the Autronica acquisition contributed to the year-over-year decline in net income. The divergence between adjusted and accounting measures puts adjusted earnings growth against a decline in earnings reported under accounting standards. GAAP operating income also fell to $88.2 million from $94.3 million, and the operating margin declined to 16.4% from 20.1%.
Americas segment sales rose 8% to $338.2 million, compared with $313.3 million a year earlier, while international segment sales increased 28% to $198.2 million from $155.1 million. The company said organic international sales grew 2%, while Detection segment sales included Autronica revenue beginning July 9, 2026. That means reported international segment growth included a contribution from the acquired company during part of the quarter. MSA Safety completed its acquisition of Autronica Fire and Security for $563 million, net of cash acquired. The company said deal costs weighed on net income, while Autronica sales were included in Detection figures from the date they began to be counted.
Free cash flow was $68.2 million in the third quarter, down 32% from $100.5 million in the year-ago period. The free cash flow conversion rate declined to 117% from 144%. The figures reflect lower cash generation than in the same quarter last year, alongside the decline in GAAP net income. Against the backdrop of its capital policy, the company had announced in its second-quarter results that it returned $47 million to shareholders through share repurchases and cash dividends. It also raised its annual dividend for the fifty-sixth consecutive year, according to its announcement at the time.
Chief Executive Steve Blanco said the company delivered sales growth and completed the acquisition, and launched the G1 City Edition SCBA. He added that the ALTAIR io 6 product recorded its largest order to date within MSA+, pointing to the momentum the company described in connected safety products. MSA Safety maintained its full-year reported sales growth outlook in the low double digits. The company was scheduled to hold a conference call to discuss its third-quarter results on November 3, 2026, at 10 a.m. Eastern time. The company did not provide a Zacks earnings estimate in its results release, so the release alone does not establish that results came in below analyst estimates.
