Emergent BioSolutions cut its 2026 revenue forecast on November 2 to a range of $600–645 million, from $645–675 million in its August guidance, after reporting revenue of $110 million for the quarter ended September 30. The chief executive said quarterly revenue came "within our guidance range," while the filing showed a 52% decline from $231.1 million in the same period last year. The revision follows an earlier forecast cut in August, with the April range at $720–760 million. The company also lowered its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization forecast, despite raising its full-year adjusted gross margin outlook. The figures show a divergence between the expected improvement in the annual margin and the sharp contraction in revenue and realized margins during the quarter.

The quarter turned to a net loss of $32.7 million, compared with net income of $51.2 million a year earlier. The company also posted an adjusted loss before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $4.6 million, after income of $92.6 million in the third quarter of 2025. This coincided with gross margin falling to 14% from 54%, and adjusted gross margin declining to 28% from 62%. Revenue for the first nine months of the year totaled $500.4 million, compared with $594.2 million in the same period of 2025, a 16% decline. Second-quarter revenue was $234.3 million, up from $140.9 million a year earlier, while adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization totaled $96.5 million.

By product, medical countermeasure product revenue was $59.4 million, down 58% year over year, while commercial product revenue fell 27% to $40.9 million. The chief executive attributed the quarter’s performance to the biodefense, medical countermeasures and naloxone portfolio, and said total revenue came within the company’s guidance. The full-year forecast included a 20%–25% year-over-year decline in commercial product revenue. The company also said the timing of U.S. and international government sales and deliveries would affect medical countermeasure product revenue. This outlook makes sales timing one of the factors that will determine product revenue for the rest of the year, alongside the level of commercial product revenue.

Emergent cut its 2026 adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization forecast to $110–140 million, from $130–150 million in its August guidance. By contrast, it raised its expected adjusted gross margin range to 45%–47%, from 42%–44%. The annual guidance includes an expected net loss of between $225 million and $255 million; the company said the forecast partly reflects non-cash impairment charges of about $191 million in the second quarter. The company estimated research and development expenses at about 6% of revenue, and selling, general and administrative expenses at about 28%–30%. Operating cash flow for the nine months ended September 30 was $122.4 million, compared with $92.9 million in the same period a year earlier.

As part of managing its obligations, the company announced that it completed the repurchase of unsecured notes with an aggregate face value of $75 million in September. Its shares closed at $6.67, $7.09, $7.22 and $6.81 in the sessions from October 27 to 30, respectively, ahead of the results announcement on November 2. A call to discuss the results was scheduled for that day at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
