Clariant reported third-quarter 2026 profit before exceptional items of 151.5 million Swiss francs, down 6.5% from the same period a year earlier, while the margin fell to 15.6% from 17.9%. Adjusted profit was 5% below analysts’ estimate of 159 million francs, according to Investing.com. By contrast, sales rose 5.6% in local currencies to 968.8 million francs, according to the company statement published on November 3. Chief Executive Konrad Kaiser said sales growth showed the effectiveness of price management, adding that the portfolio had proved resilient in a volatile operating environment. The results highlight a divergence between price-driven revenue growth and declining profitability, with greater operating pressure in the Catalysts unit.

In Swiss francs, sales rose 6.9% compared with the third quarter of 2025, while pricing contributed a 5.7% increase and volume declined 0.1% after accounting for the effect of portfolio streamlining. The company says price growth supported revenue at a time when overall volumes did not post a comparable increase. On profits, Clariant attributed the margin decline to corporate costs returning to their usual pattern, after the timing of those expenses had a positive effect a year earlier. It also cited a less favorable business mix and raw-material volatility, which affected costs and inventory valuation in the Care Chemicals and Catalysts units. This means sales growth did not translate into margin improvement, as cost and mix factors coincided with a change in the timing of expenses.

The impact of the Middle East conflict was more direct in the Catalysts unit, where sales volumes fell 1.9% during the quarter despite a 1.8% rise in local-currency sales. Prices in the unit rose 3.7%, offsetting some of the volume weakness in revenue. The company said the conflict led customers to delay orders, including high-margin orders that were rescheduled. The decline in volumes and the shift in those orders weighed on operating leverage, alongside a negative effect from business mix and inventory valuation. Catalysts profit before exceptional items was 23.1 million francs, down 29.4% from a year earlier.

Data for the first nine months show Clariant sales rose 1% in local currencies to 2,828.1 million Swiss francs. But the margin on profit before exceptional items fell to 17.1% from 18.0% in the corresponding period of 2025. The company said the negative impact in Catalysts outweighed positive contributions from other business units during this period. In the second quarter, adjusted profit margin had risen 80 basis points year on year to 18.2%, compared with 17.4% in the second quarter of 2025. Comparable sales in that quarter also rose 0.6% in local currencies to 941.3 million francs, while Catalysts sales fell 13.3% because of the Middle East conflict.

Clariant kept its 2026 guidance unchanged, expecting local-currency sales to be broadly stable and a margin on profit before exceptional items of about 18%. It also expects free cash flow conversion to exceed 45% for the year. The company said the Middle East conflict would continue to affect orders in its Catalysts and Oil Services units, while it expects a strong final quarter for Catalysts, supported by a strong order book. The chief executive added that full-year guidance was unchanged, citing the strength of the order book, particularly in Catalysts during the fourth quarter. Supporting performance, cumulative annualized savings from performance-improvement programs reached 79 million francs as of September 30, and the company is targeting 90 million in 2026 and 100 million by 2027.

Clariant’s financial calendar sets February 23, 2027, for the release of fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results. The annual results will provide a reading on the company’s performance after a quarter in which the conflict continued to affect orders for Catalysts and Oil Services. Until then, the company’s stated guidance is for broadly stable local-currency sales, an adjusted profit margin of about 18%, and free cash flow conversion above 45%. The company links its expectation of a strong final quarter for Catalysts to its order book, while cost-reduction programs continue toward their stated targets. These expectations remain part of 2026 guidance, which the company confirmed was unchanged.
