Lighter Plans Two CFTC Applications to Trade and Clear Derivatives

Key Facts

1Lighter plans to apply for registration as a designated contract market and a derivatives clearing organization, and had not filed the applications or received approval as of October 22, 2026.
2LIT was around $3.88 on October 21, up 21.3% over 24 hours, within a range of $3.21 to $3.97.
3The buyback tracker recorded $4,108,457 in October 2026 and $2,660,956 in September 2026.
4DeFiLlama lists the next vesting date as December 29, 2026, at a rate of 3.19 million LIT a week.

Lighter plans to apply to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission to register as a designated contract market and a derivatives clearing organization, seeking to clear the way for derivatives trading and clearing under a U.S. regulatory framework. The move remains a plan: the platform had not filed the applications or received the commission’s approval as of October 22, 2026. The effort comes as the platform seeks access to the U.S. institutional market, according to a report by TokenPost. Lighter held preliminary discussions with commission staff on applying existing trading and clearing regulatory principles on-chain. TokenPost quoted the platform’s founder, Novakovsky, as saying the discussions covered "applying existing trading and clearing regulatory principles on-chain."

Each application requires a separate review process at the commission. The CFTC says an application for designation as a contract market is subject to a 180-day review period, and the applicant must demonstrate compliance with the relevant core principles. This process requires demonstrating compliance with 23 core principles, as well as submitting the minimum required documents for the application to be considered complete in substance. An application to register as a derivatives clearing organization requires a completed form and its attachments, and the commission says it will approve or deny the application within 180 days. The review period may be paused if the application is incomplete, making the completeness of the documents part of the process timeline.

Price records show a sharp move in the token around the plan’s announcement. On October 21 at 19:55 UTC, LIT was around $3.88, up 21.3% over 24 hours. During that period, the price ranged from a low of $3.21 to a high of $3.97. These figures provide a dated snapshot of one day’s market activity and do not in themselves mean the applications have been filed or approved by the commission. Filings and regulatory proceedings can be tracked through the commission’s public records search tool for information and applications from trading and clearing organizations.

On token economics, the buyback tracker recorded purchases worth $4,108,457 in October 2026, compared with $2,660,956 in September. The tracker draws on DeFiLlama’s token-holder revenue data and also allows users to track LIT purchases in the Lighter explorer. It indicates that the first recorded buyback was on January 5, 2026, and the latest recorded transaction was on October 31, 2026. These figures put buyback activity in the context of recent months, alongside the regulatory application the platform plans to submit. Buybacks and vesting remain separate from the commission’s review of registration applications.

DeFiLlama lists the next LIT vesting date as December 29, 2026, with linear vesting of 3.19 million tokens a week for teams and investors. The date is not consistent across tracking pages: Tokenomics.com lists January 28, 2027, so December 29 is not a confirmed official date. DeFiLlama lists circulating supply at 250 million LIT, against a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. The overlap between the displayed vesting schedule and buyback activity puts holders’ focus on token supply and timing at the center of market monitoring. The dates and figures here reflect those shown on tracking pages; the sources reviewed by the article did not provide a confirmed official vesting date.

The current limits of the service remain an important factor in assessing the potential scope of U.S. expansion. Lighter’s current perpetuals service through the Robinhood wallet excludes U.S. residents. Novakovsky said any potential integration with Robinhood’s U.S. products would depend on licensing and product suitability. Robinhood has not announced a U.S. launch of the service. The regulatory path will next depend on filing both applications, completing them and then beginning the commission’s review, which sets a 180-day timeframe after submission, with the clock subject to a pause if an application is incomplete.
