Japan’s U.S. LNG Imports Exceed 1 Million Tons in August
Key Facts
Japan’s imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States exceeded 1 million tons in August 2026, the first time shipments have surpassed that level in a month, according to the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation, or JOGMEC. Japan’s total LNG imports reached 4.99 million tons in the same month. U.S. shipments accounted for more than one-fifth of the total, making the United States an important supplier in Japan’s supply mix. This comes as Japanese companies work to secure U.S. volumes through long-term contracts.
JERA announced plans in June 2025 to buy up to 5.5 million tons a year of U.S. LNG under 20-year contracts, with deliveries expected to begin around 2030. The announced volume included 2.5 million tons a year under nonbinding understandings, Reuters reported. After the deals, the United States was expected to account for about 30% of JERA’s LNG mix, up from 10% at the time. The company said its U.S. purchase contracts do not restrict the destination of shipments. It added that this flexibility allows it to respond to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand and forms part of its strategy to strengthen the stability of Japan’s energy supply.
Japan’s moves also included an agreement Tokyo Gas signed in November 2025 to buy 1 million tons a year of LNG from Venture Global for 20 years, with supplies set to begin in 2030, Reuters reported. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. With JERA’s plan for 5.5 million tons a year, Kyushu Electric Power’s agreement for 1 million tons a year, and agreements involving Tokyo Gas and Mitsui, Japan’s announced purchases of U.S. LNG in 2025 reached at least 8.5 million tons a year. These figures reflect a shift toward locking in future supplies through long-term contracts. The available information does not provide a basis for linking these contracts to a Bank of Japan interest-rate decision or industrial production data.
August 2026 data confirm that U.S. supplies have become a material share of Japan’s actual imports, alongside contracts targeting deliveries in later years. That month, volumes from the United States exceeded 1 million tons, while total imports reached 4.99 million tons. At the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference hosted by Japan on September 11, 2026, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the International Energy Agency emphasized cooperation between producers and consumers, and between the public and private sectors, to ensure stable supplies of natural gas and LNG. This focus puts supply security and cooperation among market participants at the center of Japan’s gas debate. Minutes of the Bank of Japan’s September 17 and 18 meeting are scheduled for release on November 5, followed by minutes of its October 29 and 30 meeting on December 23, 2026.
