Intel Plunges as Market Value Faces Expected Loss of More Than $146 Billion

Key Facts

1Reuters estimated that Intel’s October 30 decline would have erased more than $146 billion from its market value.
2The average analyst estimate for Intel’s fourth-quarter revenue was $17.07 billion.
3Intel said the PC market slowdown could persist through the first half of 2027.
4The broader U.S. chipmaker index fell 7.2% on October 30 and posted a monthly loss of more than 15%.

Intel shares fell in the October 30 session, in a decline that would have erased more than $146 billion from the company’s market value, according to a Reuters estimate. The selloff came after the company forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion, below the $17.07 billion average analyst estimate, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. The company said weak PC demand could persist through the first half of 2027. It added that cash flow would not be positive this year. Reuters linked the pressure to a weak PC market and the rising costs of the artificial intelligence boom, putting the recovery path under pressure from growth and financing expectations.

Personal-computer chip operations accounted for about half of Intel’s revenue in the third quarter, according to Reuters, and have become vulnerable to additional pressure from rising memory prices. Continued weakness in demand is particularly significant for the company because of this business’s large share of sales, while fourth-quarter guidance points to a slower pace than market estimates. The warning on demand followed strong gains in the stock in previous periods, raising investors’ sensitivity to any sign of slowing growth. Intel shares had more than doubled during the year through before Friday’s decline, after gains of more than 80% in 2025, according to Reuters. The sharp retreat puts the stock’s trajectory in direct conflict with the elevated expectations built up by those gains.

The selloff extended to other chipmakers, with the U.S. stocks cited in the Reuters report falling between 4% and 12% on October 30. NVIDIA closed at $204.64, down 4.22% for the session. The broader chipmaker index also lost 7.2% that day, taking its October decline to more than 15%. The Nasdaq fell 2.9% and stood 7.8% below the record closing high it reached on October 6. A portfolio manager told the Associated Press that the market is moving from a phase of hopes and expectations around artificial intelligence investment to one in which companies are being asked to show results.

Company data show another financial dimension to the pressure: cash and cash equivalents stood at $21.84 billion at the end of September, compared with long-term debt of $46.32 billion, according to Reuters. With Intel expecting no positive cash flow this year, operating pressures coincide with the company’s financing needs. The next demand signal remains tied to the period Intel itself identified: it said PC market weakness could extend through the first half of 2027. Published fourth-quarter guidance puts the company’s revenue range at $15 billion to $16 billion, compared with an analyst average of $17.07 billion. This gap between company guidance and market estimates, alongside continued weakness in the PC market, made the warning the focus of the late-October selloff.
