Hyundai Motor India quarterly sales hit 219,072 units, up 15% year on year
Key Facts
Hyundai Motor India posted record quarterly sales of 219,072 units in the second quarter of fiscal 2026-2027, up 15% year on year and 23% from the previous quarter, according to the company’s results. The result came amid strong demand for passenger vehicles in India, where sector sales reached 1.36 million units in the same quarter, up 30.7% year on year, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The association said improved affordability following GST 2.0 reforms, among other factors, supported market growth. Export growth also outpaced domestic sales growth in October, highlighting India’s role as an export hub for the company. September sales of 77,916 units were Hyundai India’s highest monthly total at that point, up 10.8% year on year.
The company said commodity pressures affected profitability in the second quarter, despite an improvement in EBITDA margin from the previous quarter. It attributed the improvement to operating leverage, a healthy mix and cost-reduction initiatives, which helped limit the impact of higher input costs. The result shows that sales growth does not automatically translate into profits at the same pace, as cost pressures can constrain profitability even as activity expands. The company recorded higher quarterly sales in the second quarter of the fiscal year than in any previous period, while its statement also cited the impact of commodities. In India, Hyundai Motor said it sold 150,039 units in the third quarter of 2026 and 444,301 units in the first nine months, with year-on-year growth of about 10% in both periods.
The vehicles sector was among the leading contributors to Indian industrial activity in September, with the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers rising 19.0% from the same period a year earlier. The industrial production index grew 6.7% year on year in September, after an initial estimate of 8.0% in August, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Manufacturing grew 7.6%, while electricity and gas rose 11.2% in September. The figures reflect a slowdown in overall index growth from August alongside strong growth in vehicle manufacturing. Industrial production data provide separate context from Hyundai’s monthly results, as the ministry did not link the reading to the company’s sales.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers expects positive growth momentum in the auto sector to continue in the second half of fiscal 2026-2027, running from October 2026 to March 2027. The association said new models and the festive season are supporting demand, while growth rates could moderate because of a higher comparison base. Hyundai management said the VENUE model was a material factor in performance and expected the BAYON to support growth in the future. Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest 15.5 billion dollars in India between 2026 and 2032 to expand manufacturing and develop local suppliers and research and development infrastructure. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has set November 30, 2026, as the release date for October industrial production data.
