Sona Comstar profit rises 29% to 223 crore rupees in record quarter
Key Facts
Sona Comstar on October 26 reported unaudited results for the quarter and half-year ended September 30, 2026, recording second-quarter profit after tax of 223 crore rupees, up 29% year on year. The company said quarterly profit, revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation reached record levels. Quarterly revenue rose 35% to 1,547 crore rupees, its highest quarterly revenue on record. Net profit margin was 14.4%. The results come as electric vehicle products account for a growing share of the company’s business, with revenue from the segment growing faster than total revenue.
Battery electric vehicle revenue grew 129% year on year in the quarter, lifting its share to a record 51% of automotive revenue. That represents more than half of revenue from automotive products, according to the company’s disclosure, not total sales of mechanical products as stated in the earlier draft. The expansion shows the growing contribution of electric vehicles to the company’s business mix during the period. By comparison, total quarterly revenue grew 35%, a slower pace than battery electric vehicle revenue. The disclosure did not provide a verified comparison with market expectations, so the results do not support describing them as having beaten estimates.
For the first half of fiscal 2027, revenue rose 43% to 2,857 crore rupees, while profit after tax increased 36% to 403 crore rupees. The first-half net profit margin was 14.1%, compared with the quarter’s 14.4%. The figures show that first-half profit growth remained below revenue growth, while still being strong year on year. In the quarterly comparison, revenue in the year-earlier period was 1,144 crore rupees and profit after tax was 173 crore rupees. The company then recorded earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of 289 crore rupees and a margin of 25.3%.
On orders, the group chief executive said the company added new business worth 36 billion rupees, taking its net order book to 251 billion rupees. The disclosure described this as the second-highest level recorded at the end of a quarter. The order book is valued at 25,100 crore rupees, according to the company’s statement. Electric vehicle, robotics and physical AI programmes account for 65% of the order book, according to the official disclosure. The chief executive said: "We secured new business worth 36 billion rupees, taking our net order book to 251 billion rupees, its second-highest level at the end of a quarter."
The new business includes a limited-slip differential programme for electric vehicles, which added 7 billion rupees to the order book, with production expected to begin in the first half of fiscal 2029. A motor controller programme for electric two-wheelers added 3.8 billion rupees, with production expected to begin in the first half of fiscal 2028. This means some of the new programmes will begin production in stages from the first half of fiscal 2028 through the first half of fiscal 2029. The company said free cash flow from operations in the first half exceeded one and a half times what it recorded in the whole of fiscal 2026. Management said: "In the first half of fiscal 2027, we generated more than one and a half times the free cash flow from operations that we generated in the whole of fiscal 2026."
