Key Facts
Vedanta Power reported a net profit of 83 crore rupees in the quarter ended September 30, 2026, after posting a net loss of 423 crore rupees in the previous quarter, a quarterly turnaround accompanied by strong growth in revenue and operating profit. The company said revenue rose 38% year on year to 2,908 crore rupees, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased 122% to 421 crore rupees. Profit before exceptional items was 101 crore rupees, compared with a loss of 142 crore rupees in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. The results are for the second quarter of financial year 2027, not financial year 2026 as stated in the initial draft. The figures reflect improved performance across annual and quarterly comparisons, with net profit and profit before exceptional items measured against different comparisons.
Higher electricity sales supported growth at Vedanta Power, with sales rising 26% year on year to 5,593 million units during the quarter. The Meenakshi unit recorded a larger increase of 111%, with sales reaching 1,470 million units. On the balance sheet, net debt stood at 7,444 crore rupees at the end of the quarter. The net debt-to-earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization ratio improved to 4.47 times, from 9.82 times a year earlier. These indicators put business growth and an improved leverage measure in the context of the quarter’s results, while net profit and profit before exceptional items remain separate figures.
In its oil and gas business, Vedanta turned to a net profit of 746 crore rupees in the quarter ended September 2026, compared with a loss of 92 crore rupees in the corresponding period a year earlier. Total income rose 3% to 2,628 crore rupees, but production fell 19% to 6.6 million barrels of oil equivalent. The company attributed the improved performance to higher realised prices and cost optimisation, according to the Business Standard newspaper. It said production optimisation measures included well interventions and developing artificial-lift programmes to maximise recovery from mature assets in Rajasthan and Ravva. The results show a contrast between the unit’s return to profitability and lower production volumes during the quarter.
The oil and gas unit announced three discoveries in the Rajasthan block during the first half of the year, while the commercial potential of the discoveries remains under evaluation. This comes as the unit recorded a decline in quarterly production, making assessment of the discoveries’ commercial viability part of monitoring the business outlook. Available information did not specify a date for the results of this assessment or the expected production volume from the discoveries. The anticipated development therefore remains the company’s evaluation of their commercial potential, alongside its stated efforts to recover more production from mature assets. No further details were provided on the timetable for these steps.
Suzlon Energy reported operating revenue of 4,869.05 crore rupees in the quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with 3,865.54 crore rupees a year earlier, while net profit was 394.15 crore rupees against 1,279.44 crore rupees. The annual comparison for net profit appears steep, although the year-earlier period included a deferred tax credit of 718.18 crore rupees. On a pre-tax basis, the company posted 518.21 crore rupees in the quarter, compared with 562.50 crore rupees in the same quarter a year earlier. In the quarterly comparison, operating revenue rose 27% to about 4,869 crore rupees, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased 21% to 720 crore rupees, and profit after tax rose 29% to 394 crore rupees. These measures show how the annual net profit comparison, affected by the earlier tax credit, differs from the improvement recorded against the previous quarter.
Explaining margin pressures, Suzlon management said the wind turbine contribution margin fell to 21.2% from 26.9% in the corresponding quarter a year earlier, due to customer mix, scope of work, currency and commodity volatility, as well as non-recurring operating expenses. During trading on Friday, October 30, the stock fell by as much as 9% after the results were published, according to a CNBC-TV18 report. Management cut its financial year 2027 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization margin guidance to about 15%, from about 17% previously. It also forecast a wind turbine contribution margin of between 22% and 23% for the financial year. The report linked the outlook to expectations that external conditions would return to normal, without specifying when.
