Twilio targets at least 10% organic growth in 2027, up from previous 7%-8% framework
Key Facts
On October 29, Twilio issued preliminary guidance for at least 10% organic revenue growth in fiscal 2027, compared with an annual framework of 7% to 8% presented at its 2025 Investor Day. The guidance signals that management has raised its medium-term expectations after strong third-quarter performance, but remains directional. The CFO said the outlook is based on business trends, including messaging, voice and software add-on performance. Management did not attribute the target to a single product or present it as a guaranteed result. She said further details would be provided on the fourth-quarter 2026 earnings call.
The company reported third-quarter revenue of $1.56 billion, up 20% year over year on a reported basis and 16% organically. It also raised its fiscal 2026 outlook, now expecting reported revenue growth of 20%, versus a previous range of 18%-18.5%. It raised its organic growth estimate to 15% from a range of 13%-13.5%. The revisions reflect an improved near-term outlook following the third-quarter results. In the second quarter, revenue was $1.50 billion with 17% organic growth, putting third-quarter performance below that organic level.
Twilio expects fourth-quarter revenue of $1.595 billion to $1.605 billion, and year-over-year organic growth of 11% to 12%. That range implies a slowdown from the 16% recorded in the third quarter, even as the company raised its full-year 2026 outlook. Investing.com coverage highlighted the expected slowdown following the guidance announcement, while shares fell 15.4% in after-hours trading on October 29, despite earnings and revenue topping estimates. Shares closed at $241.90 that day, after closing at $253.77 on October 28 and $263.65 on October 26. The after-hours move and market reaction show that fourth-quarter guidance was a focus for investors alongside longer-term expectations.
Management attributed strength in some business lines to growth in usage and related products. Voice revenue growth exceeded 20%, while messaging revenue rose 24%, driven mainly by higher volumes and increased use of WhatsApp and RCS, according to the earnings call transcript. Additional carrier fees contributed about 7 points of messaging growth, showing that some of the increase came from fees as well as activity volumes. The CFO said, "Messaging is doing very well," and cited voice, software add-ons and some of the company's largest products among the factors informing the outlook. These factors support management's explanation of the preliminary guidance without making any single business line its exclusive basis.
Expansion metrics among existing customers improved from a year earlier: dollar-based net expansion was 114% in the third quarter of 2026, versus 109% in the third quarter of 2025. The rate was 116% in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 108% in the second quarter of the prior year. Free cash flow was $369.6 million in the third quarter, versus $247.5 million in the same period of 2025. The company also raised its 2026 operating income and free cash flow ranges to $1.19-$1.20 billion each, from $1.135-$1.155 billion previously. These figures place the 2027 guidance in the context of improving revenue and cash flows, alongside the expected quarterly slowdown in organic growth.
On its product agenda, management said general availability of its identity service offering is planned for next year, following its launch in private beta. Twilio also plans to hold an Investor Day alongside the SIGNAL conference in San Francisco on April 13 and 14, 2027. Before then, the CFO said the fourth-quarter earnings call would be the next opportunity to discuss fiscal 2027 expectations in depth. The anticipated update follows the company's presentation of an initial framework above its previous Investor Day target. The CEO said AI adoption requires fast, reliable infrastructure, and that Twilio believes it is well positioned to benefit from this demand.
