AutoNation Adds $1 Billion to Share Buyback Authorization as Quarterly Profit Falls
Key Facts
AutoNation’s board authorized up to an additional $1 billion in share repurchases in October 2026, alongside the announcement of third-quarter results on October 30. The company said current market conditions favor share repurchases, while $1.4 billion remained available for repurchases as of October 28. The new authorization comes as reported earnings declined from the same period last year, despite growth in some adjusted metrics and recurring business activities. Net income fell to $162.3 million in the third quarter from $215.1 million a year earlier. Operating income also fell 16% to $314.6 million, compared with $372.4 million in the third quarter of 2025.
Quarterly revenue was little changed at $7,010.3 million, compared with $7,037.4 million in the third quarter of the previous year. Diluted earnings per share fell to $4.87 from $5.65. By contrast, adjusted earnings per share rose to $5.11 from $5.01, marking annual growth for the seventh consecutive quarter, according to the results statement. The divergence between lower net income and diluted earnings per share on one hand, and improvement in the adjusted measure on the other, highlights quarterly results in which not all metrics moved in the same direction. The buyback decision remained in place in this context, with the company citing current market conditions as its rationale.
CEO Mike Manley said record after-sales service performance and strong growth at AutoNation Finance boosted recurring earnings and cash flow contributions. Manley described cash generation as exceptional and linked it to the contribution of those two businesses. AutoNation Finance income rose to $15.4 million in the third quarter from $1.5 million a year earlier. Parts and service revenue also increased 5.2% year over year to $1,290 million. These figures provide context for the company’s statement that recurring activities are contributing more, at a time when overall operating income and net income declined.
The company said adjusted free cash flow totaled $739 million in the nine months ended September 30, 2026, equivalent to 141% of adjusted net income for the period. Manley said AutoNation had used about 85% of its adjusted free cash flow to repurchase shares since the start of the year. He added that the purchases reduced shares outstanding 9% through October 30. This reflects the use of buybacks as a primary destination for available cash, as the board expanded the authorization for them. The reported figures do not specify how much of the additional authorization the company will actually use.
In the first nine months of 2026, AutoNation repurchased 3.1 million shares for $620 million, at an average of $198.68 per share. Total share purchases since the start of the year through October 28 rose to 3.4 million shares for $668 million. On September 30, the company had $1.5 billion in liquidity, including $51 million in cash and $1.4 billion available under its revolving credit facility. These figures put past repurchases and the new authorization in the context of the company’s financial resources, while $1.4 billion remained available for repurchases as of October 28. The company’s shares, which trade under the ticker AN, closed at $169.34 on October 29, according to EL7 data.
