Universal Display reported revenue of $160.4 million for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, up from $139.6 million in the same period last year, according to the company's statement via Business Wire. That represents year-over-year growth of about 14.9%, but revenue fell short of the analyst consensus estimate of $162.6 million, as reported by StockStory. The company said it still expects fiscal 2026 revenue to be near the low end of its previous guidance range of $630 million to $670 million. The outlook puts the quarter's performance in a more cautious annual context, despite year-over-year growth in total revenue over the three months. Results showed a clear divergence between higher royalties and license fees and lower materials sales.

Royalties and license fees revenue was $75.5 million for the quarter, compared with $53.3 million a year earlier. The company attributed the increase mainly to higher volumes of material units sold and a change in customer mix, as well as a $9.5 million settlement that reduced royalties and license fees revenue in the year-earlier period. That settlement also means the year-over-year comparison was affected by a weaker base in the previous third quarter. By contrast, materials sales fell to $79.7 million from $82.6 million. The company said material unit volume rose 9%, but a change in customer mix and an unfavorable $4.8 million cumulative adjustment contributed to the sales decline.

The differing performance of the two revenue components was reflected in quarterly profitability metrics. Gross margin was 73%, compared with 75% in the third quarter of 2025, while operating income rose to $53.7 million from $43.1 million. For the full year, the chief financial officer said gross margin is expected to be near the low end of the 74% to 76% guidance range. The CFO attributed this to product and customer mix, linking the margin outlook to factors the company said affected materials sales. The quarterly figures show operating income rising even as gross margin declined from the year-earlier period.

Results for the first nine months point to a weaker revenue and operating income trajectory than the latest quarter alone. Consolidated revenue was $454.8 million in the first nine months of 2026, compared with $477.7 million in the same period of 2025. Operating income for the period fell to $150.1 million from $181.3 million. Third-quarter revenue growth therefore comes against a backdrop of lower consolidated revenue since the start of the year, while the company continues to stand by its annual outlook near the low end of its previous range. This puts annual revenue and gross margin guidance at the center of investor attention as they track results in coming periods.

On capital allocation, the company repurchased about 963 thousand shares for about $79 million during the third quarter. Repurchases totaled about 2.1 million shares worth approximately $193 million in the first nine months of the year. The company also announced a fourth-quarter cash dividend of $0.50 per share. The dividend is payable on December 31, 2026, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on December 17. These announced cash distributions give shareholders a specific item to track alongside developments in revenue and margins.

Following the results announcement, the stock rose 0.93% in after-hours trading to $91.25, after closing the regular session at $90.41 on October 28. That close differs from the $90.36 price recorded on October 27, and the data provided do not support a daily trading range for that date. On the earnings call, the chief executive said the company's AI-powered materials discovery platform had created a virtual library of more than 1 billion molecular designs and evaluated about 50 million candidates. He added that the evaluations were conducted using the company's proprietary models. These figures show the scale of research and development activity cited by management alongside the financial results, without specifying any related revenue or financial contribution.
