Societe Generale profit jumps 24.1% to 1.888 billion euros in third quarter
Key Facts
Societe Generale said group net income reached 1.888 billion euros in the third quarter of 2026, up 24.1% from the same period a year earlier. The result beat the average analyst estimate of 1.620 billion euros and the median estimate of 1.651 billion euros. Group revenue, or net banking income, rose 7.8% to 7.173 billion euros. Gross operating income also increased 18.7%, reflecting broader revenue growth alongside improved profitability. The main performance drivers were the divergence between equity trading, which surged, and fixed-income and currency trading, which contracted.
Equity revenue at the global banking and investor solutions division reached a quarterly record of 1.202 billion euros, up 45.9% from the third quarter of 2025. By contrast, fixed-income and currency revenue fell 20.6% to 474 million euros. The divergence is consistent with Reuters' summary, which attributed the profit increase to strong equity trading that offset a sharp decline in fixed-income trading. The figures show that growth in equity activity was the strongest reported performance driver, but that markets businesses did not move in a single direction. Reuters' summary gave no further details on the reasons for the difference in activity between the two categories.
French retail, private banking and insurance also posted growth: revenue rose 10.9% to 2.531 billion euros, while net income climbed 55.4% to 682 million euros. Reuters' summary said retail banking activity benefited during the quarter, a view supported by the division's higher revenue and net income in the disclosure. This comes amid declining French household confidence: the index fell to 80 points in October, down five points from September and at its lowest level since June 2013. The index provides a backdrop for the domestic economy in which the bank operates, while official data do not link the decline in confidence to banking-sector results. The division's reported figures were therefore strong despite the weaker household sentiment index.
The results reflect the continued improvement the bank reported in the first half of the year, when revenue reached 14.2 billion euros, up 2.4% year on year, and group net income was 3.5 billion euros, up 13.9%. In July, the bank raised its 2026 target for return on tangible equity to around 11%, from a previous target of above 10%. The return was 13.0% in the third quarter and 12.3% in the first nine months, exceeding the announced annual target. Chief Executive Slawomir Krupa said the group had posted "record net income for the quarter and the first nine months of the year." He added that the bank would continue to execute its "profitable growth strategy to achieve its 2029 targets."
On financial indicators, the Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 13.4% at the end of September, while the liquidity coverage ratio stood at 145% of net cash outflow requirements over 30 days. The cost of risk was 28 basis points for the quarter, within the annual guidance range set by the bank of 25 to 30 basis points. These indicators provide context for the profitability results: the disclosure combines income growth and a return above the announced target with the capital and liquidity levels reported by the bank. The cost-of-risk figure also places the quarter's performance within management's range for 2026. The disclosure did not mention a share-price move or market reaction to the results among these figures.
The bank had set 29 October 2026 as the date for publishing its third-quarter and nine-month results, and listed 4 February 2027 for the announcement of fourth-quarter and full-year results. The preliminary estimate of French GDP for the third quarter is scheduled for publication on 30 October 2026. The economic release comes a day after the bank's results, as the household confidence index stands at its lowest level since June 2013. Societe Generale's next financial disclosure is its fourth-quarter and full-year results. Krupa said the group would continue to pursue its profitable growth strategy toward its 2029 targets.
