Jupiter Wagons received an order worth 1,140 crore rupees from India’s Ministry of Railways to manufacture and supply 2,583 wagons, Financial Express reported on October 29, 2026. The contract covers BOXNHL and BOXNS models, according to the company’s regulatory filing cited by the newspaper. The stock rose 7.36% in opening trade after the announcement, Financial Express reported. The deal adds a new government order to the company’s order book, alongside orders it says are supported by private freight operators, leasing companies and core-sector customers. The company also expects additional orders worth about 2,000 crore rupees in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027.

Managing Director Vivek Lohia said Indian Railways is expanding freight capacity “at an unprecedented scale and pace,” adding that the order reflects the ministry’s continued confidence in the company’s ability to deliver. The deal comes as the Indian government seeks to increase rail’s share of freight transport under the National Rail Plan’s targets. Financial Express cites wagon procurement, dedicated freight corridors and the PM Gati Shakti initiative among the factors supporting the development of a faster, more efficient freight network. This backdrop links the announced government order for wagons with the broader expansion of freight infrastructure. The company says its private-sector order book remains strong, supported by demand from freight operators, wagon leasing companies and core-sector customers.

Lohia said the company had expanded vertical integration across the wagon value chain, from castings and underframes to couplers and braking systems. He said the company is extending this integration to wheelsets through its Odisha facility. The reference to wheelsets has a direct bearing on the sector’s production record: the company said a severe shortage in the first half of fiscal 2026 constrained wagon output and affected execution and sales volumes despite strong demand. In fiscal 2026 results, the company’s net profit was 166 crore rupees, compared with 380 crore rupees in fiscal 2025. The profit decline provides financial context for the new order, while expectations for additional orders remain tied to converting demand into contracts and executing them.

Near-term demand could also improve following a recent Ministry of Railways tender to buy 5,800 BOBRN wagons, according to Financial Express. The report described the tender as a factor improving near-term demand prospects, but it remains separate from the 1,140 crore rupee order won by Jupiter Wagons. The company expects, according to its published forecast, additional orders worth about 2,000 crore rupees in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027. This forecast comes amid a mix of government orders and private demand sources that the company says support its order book. How much of the tender and expected demand converts into new contracts will become clear as the award and delivery cycle progresses.
